5 Ways to Boost Pedestrian Safety with In-Street Crosswalk Signs for Facility Managers
Creating safer pedestrian crossings is a priority for facility managers at universities, churches, schools and businesses. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) continues to identify pedestrian safety as a major roadway concern. WorkZoneSupply.com carries in-street pedestrian crosswalk signs with rubber bases and plastic frames for appropriate crossing applications. This article outlines five ways facility managers can improve visibility and pedestrian awareness while following applicable MUTCD, local and agency requirements.
Why Pedestrian Safety Matters for Facilities
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) notes that many pedestrian incidents occur at uncontrolled intersections. For facility managers, protecting students, employees, and visitors reduces liability and fosters secure environments. In-street crosswalk signs alert drivers, slow traffic, and create safer pathways in school zones, campus walkways, church parking lots, and business entrances.
5 Strategies to Enhance Safety with Crosswalk Signs
1. High-Visibility Design for Safety
Our in-street pedestrian crosswalk signs use fluorescent yellow-green reflective sheeting and bold symbols to improve conspicuity. R1-6 and R1-6a designs are intended for specific crossing applications; placement and use should follow the current MUTCD plus any state, local or facility requirements.
2. Durable Construction for Reliable Safety
Featuring a recycled rubber base and a flexible plastic frame, these signs are designed for repeated outdoor use. The weighted base helps provide stability, while the flexible frame can recover from incidental contact. Facility managers should inspect signs regularly and replace damaged components as needed.
3. Flexible Installation for Dynamic Safety Needs
Portable and lightweight, our in-street crosswalk signs have ergonomic handles and a press-fit base for easy setup. This is ideal for churches managing event-based traffic or schools adjusting to daily schedules. Facility managers can deploy signs at key crosswalks to enhance safety without permanent infrastructure changes.
4. Customizable Messaging to Boost Safety Compliance
Tailored signage improves compliance. Our custom signage options include messages like “STOP FOR PEDESTRIANS” or “CAUTION: SCHOOL ZONE,” aligning with local regulations and branding. For universities, signs near dorms reinforce safety messages, while businesses guide customers across parking lots safely.
5. Match the Device to the Application
In-street pedestrian signs are intended for specific crossing conditions. Facility managers should confirm that the selected sign, legend and placement are appropriate under the current MUTCD and any state, local or facility requirements before installation.
Benefits for Specific Facilities
- Schools: Protect students in school zones with signs at crosswalks, minimizing risks during drop-off and pickup.
- Universities: Enhance on campuses by placing signs at high-traffic pathways or near academic buildings.
- Churches: Manage event traffic with portable signs for safe crossings in parking lots.
- Businesses: Improve pedestrian guidance and visibility around parking areas and entrances.
Best Practices for Implementing Crosswalk Signs
To maximize safety, facility managers should:
- Place Strategically: Install at uncontrolled crosswalks, avoiding signalized intersections per MUTCD rules.
- Maintain Regularly: Inspect reflective sheeting and structural integrity for visibility and durability.
- Combine with Other Measures: Use alongside speed bumps or “Yield to Pedestrians” signs for comprehensive traffic safety.
- Educate Stakeholders: Inform staff and visitors about the signs to encourage compliance.
- Customize for Impact: Add facility-specific messaging to align with safety goals.
